Hotlinking is a largely accepted Internet expression for linking to another website’s images. In other words, if you build a website, another person may want to use the images which you have and instead of downloading them from your site and then uploading them to their own site, they may simply put links straight to your website. In this way, whenever a visitor opens their site, the images shall be loaded from your account, thus stealing from your own monthly traffic quota, not to mention the copyright problems which can develop or that someone may be trying to deceive people into believing that they are in fact on your site. In rare situations, documents and other kinds of files could also be linked in the exact same way. To prevent this from happening and to avoid such situations, you can permit hotlink protection for your site.
Hotlinking Protection in Cloud Website Hosting
You can easily secure your content if you create an .htaccess file inside the website’s root folder, but if you do not have previous experience, you can use our hotlink protection tool. The latter comes with all cloud website hosting plans which we offer and could be accessed via the in-house built Hepsia Control Panel. The protection can be activated in two simple steps - select the domain or subdomain for the website in question, then choose if our system should create the .htaccess file in the main folder or within a subfolder and you'll be ready. You do not need any programming expertise or any experience with this kind of matters, as there will be nothing else to do. If you would like to disable the protection at some point, you can see all the sites that are protected within the very same section of the Control Panel with a Delete button alongside each one of them.
Hotlinking Protection in Semi-dedicated Servers
If you have a semi-dedicated server account with us and you notice that someone has hotlinked any of your images, you may use the security tool we have designed and included in our in-house built Hepsia hosting CP. Once you activate this function, a server-generated image shall appear on the third-party website in place of your real images. You will only need to check out the Hotlink Protection section in the CP and choose the domain or subdomain which your site uses from a convenient drop-down menu - it's as easy as that. When necessary, you shall also have the option to switch on the feature only for a specific subfolder and not for the website as a whole. Deactivating the protection is just as easy - get back to exactly the same section, check the box beside the particular Internet site and then click on the Delete button.
